Located west of Cusco at 3,300 meters above sea level, from there it is possible to appreciate the Urubamba mountain range and the snowy peaks of “La Verónica” (5,682 meters above sea level) and “Chikón” (5,530 meters above sea level). Its important occupation began when the Inca nobles of Cusco were stripped of their palaces in Qosqo and had to go out and settle in other small towns such as Maras. It has a church made of adobes, typical of the religious architecture of the town, inside the church there are canvases from the Cusco School. In addition, this town is known as the city of the covers with their respective heraldic shields.
The Moray archaeological circuit is a unique archaeological group of its kind. These are gigantic natural depressions or holes on the surface of the land that were used to build terraces or agricultural platforms with their respective irrigation channels around their contours. What draws powerful attention is the difference in average annual temperature between the top and bottom of the depressions.
Moray, due to its climatic conditions and other characteristics, was an important center for domestication, acclimatization and hybridization of wild plant species that were modified or adapted for human consumption.
Then we will go to the Salineras located 7 km from Moray. Towards the northwest of the town of Maras are the famous Salineras, known by some as “salt mines,” made up of about 3,000 small wells, built on the side of the “Qaqawiñay” mountain, which fill or fill during the dry season. They “water” every 3 days with salt water that emanates from a natural spring located at the top of the wells so that when the water evaporates, the salt contained in it gradually solidifies. This process will continue for approximately one month until a considerable volume of solid salt is obtained.
